Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS)

Understanding Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS)

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) is a common knee condition marked by pain around the kneecap (patella). Known colloquially as runner’s knee or jumper’s knee, it frequently affects individuals participating in activities involving repetitive knee bending, running, or jumping. PFPS occurs when the patella fails to move smoothly over the femur (thigh bone) during knee movement, leading to irritation and inflammation of surrounding tissues, resulting in discomfort and pain.

Understanding the Causes of PFPS

Overuse

PFPS often occurs in athletes or individuals engaging in repetitive activities like running or jumping, leading to irritation and inflammation of knee tissues.

Muscle Imbalances

Weak or tight muscles around the knee, such as the quadriceps and hamstrings, can disrupt patellar movement, contributing to PFPS.

Poor Biomechanics

Abnormalities in lower limb alignment, such as hip rotation or foot issues, may disrupt knee function and increase PFPS risk.

Trauma

Previous knee injuries like ligament sprains may alter joint mechanics, increasing susceptibility to PFPS.

Other Factors

Obesity, age-related joint changes, and genetic factors may also influence PFPS development.

How we take care of your PFPS?

  • Customized Exercise Programs: Tailored exercise regimens focusing on strengthening and stretching the muscles around the knee joint to improve stability and alignment.
  • Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques such as soft tissue massage and joint mobilization to reduce muscle tension, alleviate pain, and improve joint mobility.
  • Orthotic Intervention: Prescription of orthotic devices or footwear modifications to correct foot mechanics and provide optimal support for the knee.
  • Activity Modification: Guidance on modifying activities or sports techniques to reduce stress on the knee joint and prevent exacerbation of symptoms.
  • Patient Well-being: Prioritizing natural solutions for overall wellness and sustained health benefits.
